A Spirit-Filled Journey

Initiated by an anonymous donation of $5,000.00, St. John Parish is offering an exciting and rewarding (in dollars and grace!) program for YOU!  I (Father John) asked Deacon Don Griffith to write, structure, and administer a program to serve the purpose of the donation.

Beginning Monday morning, January 31, you can pick up an information/application package for this program at the parish office.

Here is the deal:

  • You will complete a home study course, completely on your own time, at your convenience over the next year, until February, 2012.
  • This study course will consist of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), New Testament, especially the Gospels, St. Paul’s Letters, and the lives of four great saints.
  • Your study guide will give you the Books, Chapters, and Verses to be studied.  There are also questions to direct your study on the important points.
  • The study guide will also give you the different saints to study and a listing of the reading materials you need.

Here is how it works:

  • To be eligible, you must be either High School age (14-19) or an adult (19-150 years old).
  • The first 30 high school students and the first 30 adults to register will be accepted.
  • Registration consists of picking up your packet, paying a $10 fee for materials, and completing the application.
  • You begin your study immediately.  Approximately one month after sign-ups are completed, a question/answer meeting will be scheduled, with additional meetings held every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • One year from now, in February, 2012, a two-part test will be scheduled.  The first part is an open-book test on Scripture.  The second part will be a closed-book, written essay exam (2 pages minimum, 5 pages maximum) to be completed in 3 hours on the saint of your choice.
  • Your identity will be secret.  The tests will be graded and scored within six weeks and the winners announced.
  • First prize requires a minimum score of 85, and the other awards require a minimum score of 70.
  • There will be 4 awards for the High School winners and 4 awards for the adults:
